Cruise day at PortMiami: timing your ride
How to time a private ride to your cruise check-in window at PortMiami, what to keep in your hand luggage, and how pickups on disembarkation day work.
Cruise mornings in Miami have a rhythm of their own. Several ships can board on the same day, the road into the port fills up, and everyone arrives with more luggage than usual. A private ride takes most of the stress out of it, as long as the ride is timed to your boarding window rather than to the hour the ship sails.
Time the ride to your check-in window
Most cruise lines give each guest an arrival or check-in window during online check-in. That window is the time that matters. We plan the pickup so you reach the terminal near the start of it, with room for traffic on the way to the port and for the line of cars at the drop-off lanes.
Coming straight from the airport on sailing day? Leave a generous gap between your landing time and your window. Flights run late, and a ship does not wait. Many travelers fly in the day before and spend a night in Brickell, Downtown or Miami Beach, which turns the ride to the port into a short, relaxed one.
Know your terminal
PortMiami has several cruise terminals, and each line uses its own. Your cruise documents name yours. Send it to us with the booking, and Fernando drives straight to the right drop-off lane instead of circling the port looking for the right sign.
Keep these in your hand luggage
- Passports, or the travel documents your cruise line requires
- Your boarding documents and the luggage tags from the cruise line
- Medication, chargers and anything you need for the first afternoon
- Swimwear, if you want the pool before your suitcases reach the cabin
Tag your checked bags before you leave the hotel. At the terminal, porters take them at the curb, and they are delivered to your cabin later in the day. Anything you need right away should stay with you, not in the suitcase.
Disembarkation day
Coming home is where a little planning pays off. Ships usually dock early in the morning, and guests leave in groups over a few hours. When you book, send us the ship, the date and the walk-off time you have chosen, and tell us whether you are carrying your own bags off or collecting them in the terminal. Then text once you are through customs with your luggage, and the car comes to the pickup area.
Flying home the same day? Give yourself a realistic cushion between walk-off and your flight. We can take you straight to Miami International or Fort Lauderdale, and the Suburban has room for a family’s worth of end-of-cruise luggage.
Sailing from Port Everglades instead
The same rules apply in Fort Lauderdale: time the ride to your check-in window, name your terminal when you book, and keep documents in your hand luggage. The drive is longer from Miami, so plan the pickup earlier.
