Day trips from Miami by car: Palm Beach to Key West
Approximate drive times from Miami to Palm Beach, Naples, Key West, Orlando and Tampa, what to plan for, and how same-day returns and one-way rides work.
Miami is a great base for seeing more of Florida. With a private driver, the drive becomes part of the day instead of a chore: no rental counter, no parking to hunt for, and nobody who has to drive home after a long lunch. Here is what to expect on the routes riders ask about most.
Approximate drive times
These are rough times from central Miami in ordinary traffic. Rush hour, holiday weekends, weather and roadwork can all add to them, so treat them as a starting point rather than a promise.
- Palm Beach: about 1.5 hours
- Naples: about 2 hours, across the Everglades
- Key West: about 3.5 to 4 hours, down the Overseas Highway
- Orlando: about 3.5 hours
- Tampa: about 4 hours
Same-day return or one-way
A same-day return suits Palm Beach and Naples well: leave in the morning, enjoy lunch and an afternoon, and be back in Miami for dinner, with Fernando waiting to drive you home. Key West, Orlando and Tampa make for long days out and back, so many travelers ride one-way and stay the night, or pair the drive with a flight home from Orlando or Tampa.
Both options are on the rates page under day trips. For a one-way ride, tell us the drop-off. For a return, tell us roughly when you would like to head back, and whether that time is fixed or flexible.
What to plan
- An early start. Leaving before the morning traffic builds makes the biggest difference on any route north.
- Stops along the way: breakfast, a beach, the galleries in Palm Beach, the bridges of the Keys.
- Reservations at your destination, so the day does not depend on a table being free.
- Comfort for the ride: cold water and chargers are in the back, and there is room to stretch out.
- Child seats and breaks, if you are traveling with young children.
The Keys deserve extra time
The Overseas Highway is one of the most beautiful drives anywhere, and much of it is a two-lane road over the water. A single slowdown can hold traffic for a long time, and you will want to stop anyway, for the views and for lunch by the water. If Key West is the goal, plan an unhurried day, or better, a night there.
Why one car for the whole day
A day trip with one driver means your bags stay in the car while you explore, your pickup time can bend if lunch runs long, and the person driving you home already knows where you have been. It is the simplest way to see more of Florida without planning around the road.
